Molly Hamel finished fifth in Class MM to earn a spot in the State Open.

It’s a new season in high school cross country and the Avon High girls cross country team continues to build upon an amazing streak.

The Falcons opened the season Wednesday with three wins over Coventry, East Windsor and Sport Medicine Science Academy to extend its dual meet winning streak to 44 meets. Avon (3-0, 3-0 NCCC) had seven girls finish in the top 10 to beat Coventry, 22-37 and shutout East Windsor and SMSA by scores of 15-50.

The Canton High boys cross country team opened the season with three wins while Avon also picked up three wins. The Canton girls cross country team won two of three dual meets while the Granby boys and girls runners won one dual meet each.

The Avon High girls will be looking to win a fourth straight NCCC championship in their final season in the league. Four of Avon’s top seven runners from last fall are gone. Three graduated and the family of NCCC champion Maddi McHugh moved to North Carolina.

But a solid core of runners remain led by senior Molly Hamel, sophomore Christina Martin and junior Ryley Higgins. Hamel was second on Wednesday behind Coventry’s Ellie Jean, who set a new course record at Creaser Park with a winning time of 19:09. Kristin Goldie, Rachel Martin, Erin McGuire and Gabriella Colletti all finished in the top 10 for the Falcons.

Avon hasn’t lost a dual meet since the 2010 season and has gone 13-0 in each of the past three years.

Canton opened the season at its home course at Stratton Brook in Simsbury with a 22-36 win over Bolton and two shutout wins over Windsor Locks and Classical Magnet from Hartford. Classical is the newest member of the NCCC this fall.

Canton (3-0) had six runners in the top 10 led by James Yost, who won the race by 11 seconds with a time of 17:39. His twin brother, Dean, was third in 17:49, one second behind Bolton’s Trevor Chambers. Jake Whittingslow took fifth while Will Briggs and Zach Oliver were sixth and seventh, respectively.

Ellington and Suffield will be the teams to beat in the league this year if Canton wants to win its first league title since 2010.

The Avon boys hope to be a contender this year in the NCCC. The Falcons beat Coventry, 20-40 and shutout East Windsor and SMSA. Collin Pritchard won Wednesday’s race in Coventry by 14 seconds, winning in 18:00 at Creaser Park. Avon teammate Andrew Suter was third in 18:21 followed closely by Bryant St. Jean (18:24) and Brett Holtzman (19:04).

The Canton girls have a small team this year but the Warriors beat Classical Magnet, 25-32 on Wednesday and shutout Windsor Locks, 15-50. Canton did lose to Bolton, 20-41. Emily Briggs led the Warriors with a second place finish. Jocelyn Rossitto was seventh.

In Ellington, the Granby boys fell to defending league champion Ellington, 15-47 as the Purple Knights placed six runners among the top seven finishers. But the Bears were about nip Suffield, 26-29 and beat Enfield, 17-46. Jeremy Ray led Granby with an eighth place finish in 18:02 while teammate Daniel Jacobs was a second behind in 18:03.

The Granby girls beat Enfield, 15-50 but lost to Suffield and Ellington. Emma Sheahan led Granby with an eighth place finish.
