Historic win for Canton boys; Avon hosts big doubleheader with Suffield Friday

Riley Hollis and the Canton High boys soccer team have won seven straight games.

Riley Hollis and the Canton High boys soccer team have won seven straight games.

CANTON – After a three-goal loss to Avon in early September, Canton High coach Bill Phelps talked about getting his team some confidence. With some success, he felt the team could begin to roll. “The whole idea is to build up this team to compete in the Class S tournament, “he said at the time.

Canton is on a historic run. The Warriors tied a team record with their seventh straight win Wednesday with a 7-1 rout of East Windsor at home on the turf. Six different players scored for Canton, including Jacob Dupre with two goals.

This is the fourth team in the program’s 50-year history that have won seven straight games. In 1973, the Warriors won the final seven games of the season and won their first Class S championship. Canton also won seven straight in 1975 and in 1983.

Canton (8-2, 6-2 NCCC) can set a new team record with a win on the road against Windsor Locks (4-4-1) on Tuesday at 3:45 p.m.

Leading scorer Nate Hanson, Riley Hoffman, Colin Madigan, Tanner Clarke and Stephen Oliver had goals for the Warriors. Hanson has scored 13 goals this season while Hoffman has scored six.

Avon boys and girls challenge Suffield
AVON – Avon High boys soccer coach David Zlatin hopes his Falcons can leave the NCCC with one last championship. Avon will begin play in the Central Connecticut Conference next fall. To do it, the Falcons will have to beat Suffield Friday at 3:45 p.m. at Fisher Meadow.

It will be a great Friday afternoon of soccer at Fisher Meadows. Not only will the top two boys teams in the league square off but the top two girls teams in the league – Avon and Suffield – will play as well. That game also begins at 3:45 p.m.

The Suffield boys also have something to play for. Not only are the undefeated Wildcats (8-0) looking to win a fourth straight NCCC championship but Suffield wants to claim the state record for consecutive victories. Suffield, which has won the last three Class M titles, has won 43 in a row, tying the mark set by Granby from 1984-86.

This is the first real test for Avon (8-0-1, 8-0 NCCC) since the Falcons battled to a 0-0 tie with Joel Barlow-Redding in early September. Riley Strassner has scored 12 goals in the last six games for the Falcons while Matt Fuge has tallied 11 goals in the last seven games. Goalie Dan Mangrini and the Falcon defense have given up just one goal all season.

Ironically, it was Avon that ended Granby’s 43-game winning streak with a 3-0 win in September 1986. That ended a streak that began in 1984 when Avon beat Granby, 5-4 in double OT in the season opener that season.

In girls soccer, Avon (8-0-1) takes on Suffield (7-0-1). Both teams battled to scoreless ties with Ellington. Hannah Davey and Michaela Marcus are Avon’s top scorers with eight goals each. Kaleigh Sherman has six goals. The Falcons, anchored by goalie Emma Carlone and Lydia Cuddleback, have yet to allow a goal this season.

Suffield has won four of the last five NCCC championships. Avon has finished second in the league for the last five seasons. However in the last five years, Avon has played in four Class L championship games and has won twice (2011 and 2012).
