CANTON – Enfield’s Mary Baskerville had a game-high 15 points including four three-point goals to lead the Enfield High girls basketball team to a 41-37 win over Canton Friday night. It was the first loss of the season for the Warriors, who won their first 15 games of the season.

Sophomore Emily Briggs led Canton (15-1, 13-1 NCCC) with 10 points while Maggie Treacy and Gabby Rose chipped in with nine points each.

The game was tied at 29-29 after three quarters but the visiting Raiders held off the Warriors in the fourth quarter. Baskerville had six rebounds and six steals as well.

Despite the loss, Canton still has an opportunity to win its first NCCC championship since 1999. The Warriors hold a one-game lead over Avon (12-4, 12-2 NCCC) and Bolton (15-2, 13-2 NCCC) with four games remaining. Four wins by the Warriors will give Canton its fourth NCCC championship pennant.

This looms as a challenging week for the Warriors. Monday’s snowstorm cancelled school and with that closure, practice was also cancelled. Canton has three games on tap this week. The Warriors are on the road Tuesday in Hartford with a game against Sport Medicine Science Academy (6-10, 4-10 NCCC) and travel to Ellington (8-8, 8-6 NCCC) on Wednesday night.

On Friday night, Canton hosts Avon in the final game between the two schools as conference rivals. Avon will be moving to the Central Connecticut Conference next year. Canton closes out the regular season on Tuesday, Feb. 17 by hosting Windsor Locks (11-5, 9-5 NCCC).

NOTES: With the loss, there are just three teams left in the state that haven’t lost a game yet — Morgan, South Windsor and Farmington are still undefeated. … For the third straight week, Canton is receiving votes in the state coaches poll. The Warriors slipped one spot to No. 22 with 16 points. A week ago, Canton was ranked at No. 21 with 33 points. The Warriors made their poll debut a week earlier at No. 22 with 25 points. The last time Canton received votes was in 1999. … It was just the second time in school history that Canton won 15 straight games to open the season. The Warriors did that in 1999 when they won their first 22 in a row.
