Avon, Canton give up leads in seventh and lose in the eighth inning

It was a tough day for the Avon and Canton High baseball teams on Thursday. Both teams took the lead in the later innings of their games only to see the opposition rally to force extra innings and eventually prevail in eight innings.

Avon (4-3) scored six runs in the sixth inning to take a two-run lead only to see Northwest Catholic score twice in the seventh to send the game into extra innings where the Lions prevailed, 8-7. Canton (1-3) led by three runs in the top of the seventh inning but Enfield scored three runs in the bottom of the inning and won the game in the eighth inning, 9-8.

Avon trailed the Lions by four runs when the Falcons exploded for six runs in the sixth inning to take a 7-5 lead. Brendan Dyer had an RBI single, Sean Del Gallo had a RBI single and Chris Jacobs had a two-RBI single to centerfield.

But Northwest Catholic tied the game in the seventh. The Lions loaded the bases thanks to a walk, single by Jake Manzi and an error. Two consecutive fielders’ choices tied the game at 7-7. In the eighth, Rob Matson doubled and after a strikeout, Thomas Meucci ripped an RBI single to left field to win the game.

Meucci was 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI for Northwest Catholic while Colby Lytle was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Rob Matson added a double.

Justin Olson was 2-for-3 with a double for the Falcons while Jeremy Zarwanski had a double. Starting pitcher Kyle Emery went five innings, allowing seven hits and five runs (four were earned). Reliever Will Boone took the loss on the mound, allowing three hits but fanning two.

Canton (1-3) took a 7-5 lead in the fifth inning with a three-run outburst with two outs in the inning. With Jack Mansur on first base thanks a single, Nate Fulham walked and Jake Schaetzel’s single to left field scored Mansure to the tie the game at 5-5.

Sam Beadle’s RBI single to left field allowed Fulham to score and Ryan Enns’ RBI double scored Schaetzel and increased the lead to two runs.

Enfield (1-5) tied the game in the seventh on a RBI single from Colin Atwood and a two-out, two-RBI single to left field from Jeff Peach to send the game into extra innings tied at 8-8.

In the bottom of the eighth, Mike Tweedle was hit by a pitch with two outs. Nick Critz followed that with a game-winning triple to centerfield to give Enfield its first win of the season.

Schaetzel was 3-for-5 with two RBI and a double. Enns was 2-for-4 with a double and 2 RBI. Brandon Peters also had two hits. Schaetzel struck out six in four innings of relief work.
