Crowe lifts Mirage into Junior Division championship game with win over Tides

CANTON, July 29 – Pitcher Collin Crowe pitched a complete game, allowed two hits and struck out seven to lead the Connecticut Mirage from Canton to a 3-1 victory over Connecticut Tides from Berlin in a Farmington Bank/Vantis Life League semifinal baseball game Saturday at Mills Pond Pool field.

The win lifts the top-seeded Mirage (18-17, 14-3 Farmington Bank/Vantis) into the Junior Division championship game on Wednesday, Aug. 2, at 7 p.m. at Memorial Field in Simsbury against No. 3 seed Farmington (14-4).

Canton is looking for their first-ever Junior Division title. Canton previously won Senior Division titles in the league in 2003 and 2010.

Canton took advantage of five Berlin errors to score three unearned runs.

Trailing 1-0 in the fifth inning, Canton’s Max Wice reached on an error. He moved to second base on Jackson Chard’s infield ground ball out. Wice moved to third on a wild pitch and scored when Rory Walker grounded out to shortstop to tie the game at 1-1.

In the sixth inning, Ryan Scafuri led off the inning when he reached base on an error. Daelon Mangiafico walked. Both runners were credited with stolen bases with Scafuri moving to third and Mangiafico taking second base. But the Berlin pitcher made an error on the play and Scafuri raced home to give the Mirage a 2-1 lead.

With two outs in the inning, Gage Doormann reached on an error and Mangiafico scored from third base to give Canton a 3-1 advantage.

The Tides took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning. Cam Murphy singled to left field, stole second base and moved to third on a wild pitch. He scored on a Canton error for a 1-0 lead.

In Saturday’s other semifinal, Farmington beat Newington, 11-5, to earn a spot in the championship game. The Mirage were the top Junior Division team this summer with a 12-3 regular season record in the league. This league began in 1946 as the Jaycee/Courant baseball league.
