MONROE, Nov. 5 – Avon High’s first round volleyball match with Masuk was supposed to be close and the two teams didn’t disappoint.
No. 16 Masuk rallied from a 2-0 deficit to win three straight games to eliminate No. 17 in a marathon match in the Class L tournament on Monday night. Avon won the first two games, 25-23 and 25-22 before Masuk captured the next three bouts 32-30, 25-16 and 17-15 in the fifth and decisive set.
Junior Baylee Braun led the Falcons (13-8) with 16 kills and 13 digs while junior setter Abby St. Onge had a team-leading 30 assists, nine digs and four blocks. Junior Emily Dempsey, Avon’s leading hitter this season, had six kills while sophomore Eliza Jones made seven blocks.
Sophomore Noelle Powers had 14 digs for Avon.
Avon finished second in the CCC West’s Patriot Division behind Farmington this season. It was a challenging campaign for the Falcons who faced top 10 opponents from Farmington, Southington, Bristol Eastern and RHAM this fall.
Dempsey led the Falcons with 273 kills in 21 matches with Braun getting 143 kills. St. Onge had a team-leading 54 blocks while Jones made 38 blocks.
Masuk advances to the second round where they will face top-ranked Woodstock Academy.
