EAST HAMPTON, Nov. 5 – Penalty kicks don’t seem to bother players in the East Hampton soccer program. On consecutive days, the Bellringers advanced in the Class S tournament on penalty kicks. On Tuesday, the East Hampton girls edged Old Saybrook on PKs, 3-2.

Twenty-fours later, the East Hampton boys eliminated Canton in the second round of penalty kicks on Wednesday night. The No. 7 Bellringers (10-4-2) advanced to the Class S quarterfinals with an 8-6 edge in penalty kicks. No. 10 Canton goes home with an 11-7 record.

The game was scoreless after regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods.

Canton had three great opportunities in the second half but East Hampton and goalie Ian Reilly was up to the task. Canton goalie Josh Frigo had an outstanding afternoon, making several big stops. Riley Hollis had a great day at sweeper.

After the first round of five penalty kicks, the score was tied 4-4. Nate Hanson, James Treacy, Jason Dupre and Tanner Clarke each scored for the Warriors.

But in the second penalty kick round, Canton was only able to convert on two penalty kicks from John Comerford and Nico Tuccillo while East Hampton converted on four kicks to earn the win.

“We did all we could,” Canton coach Bill Phelps said. “It was a great season.”

It’s just the fourth time that the season has ended on penalty kicks for the Warriors. The most recent was a 2007 loss to Old Saybrook in the second round. There was also PK losses in 1985 and 1969.

East Hampton continued its success on Friday beating No. 2 Griswold, 2-0, to earn its first berth in the Class S semifinals since 2009.
