NEW YORK, Oct. 25 – Kaleigh Fratkin and Alyssa Wohlfeiler scored power play goals as the Connecticut Whale remained undefeated in the National Women’s Hockey League with a 3-1 win over the New York Riverters Sunday night at the Aviator Sports and Events Center in Brooklyn.
The Whale improve to 3-0 with the victory. Boston also improved to 3-0 with a 5-3 win over Buffalo. New York and Buffalo are each 0-3 after the first three weeks of the 18-game season.
Kelly Babstock had an empty-net goal with 51 seconds remaining in the third period to ice the game for Connecticut.
Connecticut took the early lead on Wohlfeiler’s first NWHL goal with 7:38 left in the first period off an assist from Danielle Ward. New York tied the game in the second period on a power play goal from defenseman Ashley Johnston from the top of the point with the Riveters enjoying a two-man advantage.
The Whale took a 2-1 lead in the third period when Fratkin converted on a power play off an assist from Kelly Stack with 17:35 remaining in the game. Stack is Connecticut’s leading scorer after three games with a goal and four assists for five points.

Fratkin, Wohlfeiler and Babstock each have two goals in Connecticut’s first three games.
Whale goalie Nicole Stock made 23 saves in her NWHL debut to earn the win, including some outstanding stops. New York goalie Nana Fujimoto had 17 saves including a third period stop on a breakaway by Babstock to keep it a one-goal game. New York outshot the Whale, 24-20.

The Whale is off for the next two weeks before the season resumes with back-to-back games in Buffalo against the Beauts on Sunday, Nov. 15 and Nov. 24 for 3:30 p.m. starts. Connecticut doesn’t play Boston until Nov. 29 when they travel to Harvard’s Bright-Landry Center at 3 p.m.
Connecticut beat Buffalo last week by a 4-1 margin with Wohlfeiler, Fratkin, Sam Faber and Molly Engstrom scoring goals and Jaime Leonoff stopping 41 shots to earn the win in net.
