AVON, Dec. 3 — Dr. Richard Zanini, who began his teaching career in Avon teaching history at the junior high and senior high level and retired as the superintendent of schools in Wethersfield, was inducted into the Connecticut Golf Hall of Fame Thursday night.
Zanini, who was a member at Bel Compo Golf Course (now called Blue Fox) and lived in Avon for many years, was inducted in the category of “Distinguished Service to Golf.” Zanini was inducted with PGA professional J.J. Henry, 40, of Fairfield.
A member of the Connecticut State Golf Association’s Board of Directors since 1998, Zanini has held nearly every position at the CSGA and his home club of the Wethersfield Country Club. He served as president of the CSGA for two years in 2007-08.
One of his most significant achievements has been his work with the CSGA’s scholarship fund, which has assisted hundreds of young people. Zanini work has allowed the scholarship fund to distribute more than $100,000 a year to support college students.
“It’s rewarding to see what these youngsters can accomplish when they are given the opportunity,” Zanini said. “And it’s important that these are four-year scholarships because it all adds up and can be very helpful to these young people and their families.”
Zanini said, “I am truly humbled to be recognized among so many others who I am certain are more deserving. I have received so much satisfaction from my limited efforts to contribute to the game, its history, and traditions, and I clearly have gained far more than I have given, particularly from coming to know so many wonderful people throughout the state.”
