CANTON, April 25 – The Canton High baseball trailed by as many as four runs but battled back to tie the game in the bottom of seventh and preserved to win it in the 10th inning on a sacrifice fly from Trey VandeBogart to win their second straight game with an 8-7 NCCC victory over Granby at Bowdoin Field Monday.
Granby (2-6, 2-4 NCCC) led by four in the fourth inning, 6-2 thanks to a pair of RBI doubles from John Weikhan and Parker Hansen. Canton cut the lead to one with three runs in the fifth inning.
In the fifth, James Mattson doubled and scored on a one-out RBI single by Jack Mansur to centerfield to cut the lead to three, 6-3. Trey VandeBogart singled and Mansur scored on a fielder’s choice by Nate Fulham. Canton pulled within a run, 6-5, on a RBI double by Jake Schaetzel, scoring Fulham.
Granby extended the lead to two runs in the seventh, 7-5. Nicholas Mazzucco had a leadoff double. He was erased when Steve Walsh reached on a fielder’s choice. With two outs, Walsh was on third base and scored on a failed pickoff attempt to first base.
Canton (3-3, 2-3 NCCC) didn’t flinch in the bottom of the seventh inning. Sam Beadle led off the inning with a single to center field. After a strikeout, Beadle scored on a RBI triple from Ethan Burke to cut the lead to one. Burke tied the game on a passed ball.
Granby threatened in the top of the ninth inning facing Beadle on the mound. With two outs, Beadle gave up walks to Walsh and Kyle Desjardins. Each moved up a base on a passed ball. But the Bears’ Andrew Mockton’s hard hit ball deflected off a glove to Mattson, who threw out Mockton to end the threat.
In the bottom of the tenth, Mattson, Brandon Peters and Mansur each singled. A sacrifice fly from VandeBogart won the game for Canton.
Mansur led Canton with a 3-for-5 performance and one RBI. Beadle (2-3) and Mattson (2-5) each had doubles. VandeBogart (2-4) had two hits. Granby was led by Mockton, who was 3-for-5 with a double, triple and one RBI.
Four Canton pitchers – starter Jake Schaetzel (4 IP, 6 strikeouts), Mattson (4 IP, 2 strikeouts), Beadle (2 IP, 1 strikeout) and the winning pitcher in relief, Nate Fulham – combined to strike out 10 batters. They allowed 12 hits.
It was Canton’s first win over the Bears since 2013 and just the second win over Granby in eight games dating back to 2009.
This was the beginning of a busy week of baseball for the Warriors – five games in six days. Canton plays at Bolton on Tuesday, hosts Coventry on Wednesday and travels to Windsor Locks on Thursday. Canton finishes the week at Stafford for a 1 p.m. game on Saturday.
