Canton senior Lucy Tanner won two events to help the Canton girls beat Bolton and East Windsor Tuesday.
CANTON, May 3 – For the second consecutive week, the Canton High track and field program hosted a NCCC meet in the rain and chilly temperatures. It didn’t stop the Warriors from dominating with victories over East Windsor and Bolton Tuesday at the high school.
Led by John Solomon with three victories in the 110 hurdles, 300 hurdles and high jump, the Canton boys beat Bolton, 118-32 and East Windsor, 107-43 to improve to 11-0 on the year and 10-0 in the NCCC. The Warriors extended their school-record dual meet win streak to 76, dating back to the beginning of the 2011 campaign.
The Canton girls team swept the meet and improved to 8-3 overall and 8-2 in the league with a 112-21 win over Bolton and a 78-70 win over East Windsor. Lucy Tanner (100 hurdles, 300 hurdles) and Amber Harraden (triple jump, javelin) had two wins each for the Warriors.
In the boys competition, Canton’s depth was too much for visiting East Windsor and Bolton. Max Sparks swept the 800 and 1,600 meter races while Will Carlson captured the shot put and javelin. Carlson’s throw in the javelin of 132 feet, 10 inches was his second longest throw of the season.
Solomon had two tight wins over teammates. Solomon beat Dustin Van Kirk by 0.02 of a second in the 110 hurdles and outlasted Cameron Lange in the high jump by two inches with a winning leap of 5-6.
Stephen Oliver matched his own school record in the pole vault by clearing 11-6. Aidan O’Donnell (3,200), Lange (long jump), Van Kirk (triple jump) and William Briggs (discus) each came home with individual victories.
In the girls events, Emily Mitchell tied for the win in the 100 meters with East Windsor’s Kara Lanz. Both ran the race in 13.4 seconds. Emily Briggs (1,600), Abby Briggs (800), Cameron McCauley (3,200), Elizabeth Raynor (pole vault) and Mia Tuccillo (discus) each won individual events. Canton also won the 4×400 and 4×800 relays. Raynor tied the school record of 8-0 feet, which was set by Lindsey Milligan and Emily Chouinard in 2014.
Canton’s dual meet with East Windsor came down to the final event — the 4×400 relay. If East Windsor won, they would have come away with a two-point victory.
The Warriors trailed for most of the race until Abby Briggs took the lead with 100 meters remaining in the third leg. Canton’s 4×400 relay (Tanner, Jane Frawley, Abby Briggs, Harraden) ran a season-best time of 4:29.5 to win the race and clinch the meet. The team knocked off nearly 10 seconds off their previous-best time.
The competition will be more challenging in the coming weeks. The Warriors will travel to New Britain this weekend to compete in the 11th annual Irv Black Invitational on Friday and Saturday at Veteran’s Memorial Stadium.
Next Tuesday, Canton travels to Somers and the Warriors close out the dual meet portion of the league schedule with a challenging match at Suffield on May 17 with Stafford.
