SOUTHINGTON, Oct. 11 – In the first-ever game between two programs, the Canton High field hockey team scored seven unanswered goals including a career-high four from Grace Giancola as the Warriors rolled to 7-1 victory over Southington on Tuesday.
Giancola had four goals and two assists to lead Canton (4-6) to their second win in the last six games. Ericka Nedderman, Elizabeth Raynor and Alissa Peet also added goals for the Warriors. Giancola is the first Canton player to score four goals in a single game since Kassie Grecula had four in a 9-0 win over Enfield in 2010.
Canton outshot Southington (2-8) by a 21-4 margin and had a 16-0 edge in penalty corners.
Southington took an early 1-0 lead on a goal from Alexa Zborowski. Canton tied the game with 12:48 left in the first half on a Nedderman goal off an assist from Giancola. The Warriors scored two goals in the final 1:30 of the first half to take command. Giancola gave Canton the lead with 1:30 remaining and added a second goal with 49 seconds left in the half for a 3-1 lead.

Canton has to win three of their final six games to earn a berth in the Class S tournament. Canton hosts Farmington (4-5) on Thursday night under the lights at 6:30 p.m. as part of Spirit Week contests. Canton will host Southington in the second game of the home-and-home series in the season finale on the turf field on Wednesday, Nov. 2.
