SIMSBURY, June 29 – The Simsbury American Legion baseball team split a doubleheader with Bristol on Sunday night at Memorial Field to remain in second place in Zone 1.
With one run in the fifth inning and two in the sixth, Simsbury captured the opener with a 3-1 decision. A walk and two singles helped Simsbury pull away in the sixth. In the nightcap, Bristol erased an early three-run deficit and prevailed in nine innings, 5-4.
In the opener, Simsbury’s Chris Enns (Canton High) pitched three innings, struck out four, scattered two hits, walked four and gave up a first inning run on a RBI double rom Bristol’s Kyle Pileski. Simsbury reliever Martin Cayne-Yackel pitched three innings to earn the win. E.J. Lavoie pitched a scoreless seventh inning to pick up his fifth save of the season.
In the second game, Simsbury led 3-0 after two innings only to see Bristol take a 4-3 lead with two runs in the third and fourth inning. Bristol’s Greg Lozier had a two-RBI double for Bristol while Jake Colello had an RBI triple. Pitcher Kevin Gurry (Canton High) got the start and a no decision.
Lavoie came in and pitched 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief through the seventh inning. Simsbury tied the game in the sixth inning at 4-4. Bristol, which left 10 men on base, broke through in the ninth inning. Eli Minella drew a two-out walk from reliever Dakota Hunter and scored on a double from Jarrett Michaels.
Simsbury is now 11-4 on the year and 8-3 in Zone 1. Bristol is now 10-7-1 and 6-5 in Zone 1.
Simsbury hosts Unionville on Tuesday night at 5:30 p.m. at Memorial Field, hosts Wolcott on Wednesday night at 5:30 p.m. and travels to Southington on Thursday night for an 8 p.m. contest at Fontana Field.
