CANTON – Canton High boys soccer coach Bill Phelps is looking to build some confidence his Warrior squad. A two-game winning streak won’t hurt.

Senior Nate Hanson has scored five goals in the last two games as Canton has improved to 3-2 with a 2-1 win over Bolton last Friday and a dominating 9-0 decision over Public Safety Academy of Enfield on Wednesday on the turf at the high school.

“We’re getting there,” Phelps said earlier this month. “The whole idea is to build up this team to compete in the Class S tournament.”

Canton’s nine goals against Public Safety was the largest one-game scoring outburst for the Warriors since scoring nine against Stafford in a 9-0 win 13 years ago in 2001.

Hanson had three goals against Public Safety while Riley Hoffman had two. Vinny Uccello, Riley Hollis, James Treacy and Aiden McCue each had solo goals for Canton, now 3-2 overall and 2-2 in the league. Hanson had two goals in the victory over Bolton.

Canton takes another first-year Capital Region Education Council (CREC) magnet school next Monday when they host Bloomfield-based Metropolitan Learning Center for Global and International Studies. The Warriors return to league play when they visit Hartford Classical on Tuesday at St. Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield. This is Classical’s first year in the NCCC.

The 16th annual night soccer doubleheader sponsored by the Canton Booster Club is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 25. Canton will host Sport Medicine Science Academy (SMSA) at 8 p.m. on the turf. The Canton girls will play SMSA at 6 p.m.

GIRLS SOCCER
First win of year for Warriors
CANTON – Sophomore Chloe Gucciardi had two goals as the Canton High girls soccer team won their first game earlier this week with a 6-0 shutout win over Two Rivers Magnet High School out of Hartford. It’s first varsity win for first-year head coach Seth Korn.

Sophomores Sophia Langou and Emily Mitchell also scored for Canton (1-3-1, 0-3-1 NCCC) while juniors Maggie Treacy and Katie Walker each had their first goals of the year. Goalie Amanda Gottlieb had no saves in net to earn her first shutout of the season.

Until Canton played Two Rivers, one of the CREC schools, the only player to scored goals was senior Olivia Sullivan, who had four goals in three games. She had a goal in a 1-1 tie with Granby on opening day and two goals in a 4-2 loss to Bolton last week.

Canton hosts Classical next Tuesday on the turf.
