Windsor hands Avon first loss of the season; Canton earns first win of year

Baseball ImageAVON, April 16 – Leading by two runs, it fell apart for the Avon High baseball team in the fifth inning of Saturday’s CCC Central White game with Windsor at Buckingham Field.

Windsor (2-0, 1-0 CCC Central White) scored seven runs in the fifth inning on five hits, a walk, an error, a batter hit by a pitch and a steal of home to lift the visiting Warriors to a 12-5 victory over the Falcons.

It was the first loss of the year for Avon (3-1, 1-1 CCC Central White), which had earned an impressive 5-3 win over Southington on Friday.

Against Windsor, Avon led 3-1 going into the fifth inning when Falcon starter Kyle Emery walked the leadoff batter. Reliever Connor Harris entered the game but the bases were soon loaded after an error and a Windsor batter hit by a pitch. Navian Rivera hit a two-RBI single to tie the game and the Warriors were off and running.

Avon managed just six hits in the game. Ian McDonald had a hit and two RBI for the Falcons while Chris Jacobs was 2-for-3. The Falcons scored three runs in the fourth inning on an error and two wild pitches.

For Windsor, hurler Matt Clevland was 3-for-4 with a double while Jeremy Nunes was 2-for-4 with three RBI.

Avon returns to the field Monday afternoon with a game at Wethersfield at 3:45 p.m.

Canton 9, East Granby 7
CANTON, April 16 – Sam Beadle had three hits and two RBI as Canton won its first game of the season with a 9-7 NCCC victory over East Granby at Bowdoin Field. Trey VandeBogart also had two RBI for the Warriors (1-1). Ethan Burke went four innings for the Warriors on the mound to pick up the victory.

On Friday, Canton dropped its season opener to Suffield, 3-0 despite getting 11 hits. VandeBogart and Jake Schaetzel each had three hits in the loss.
