Red Sox prospect Franklin Arias cranked a two-out pinch-hit walk-off home run in the ninth inning leading the Portland Sea Dogs to a 4-3 win against the Hartford Yard Goats on Saturday afternoon at Delta Dental Park. It is the second time in three games that Hartford has given back the lead in the ninth inning. Arias’ home run went over the right field fence, his seventh of the season. Yard Goats reliever Austin Smith retired the side in order in the eighth inning, including two strikeouts and turned things over to Fidel Uloa in the ninth.  The right-hander sat down the first two batters before hitting Will Turner. Next, Franklin Arias, the Red Sox No. 2 overall prospect, belted a pinch hit two-run homer over the right field seats to win the game.

PRO SOCCER
Rhode Island 1, Hartford 0 (penalty kicks, 4-3)
At Hartford

In the opening match of the USL’s Prinx Tires Cup tournament, Hartford and Rhode Island played to a 0-0 draw. But Rhode Island secured a point after prevailing on penalty kicks, 4-3 at Trinity Health Stadium. In PKs, Arturo Diz Pe opened the scoring for Hartford. After Rhode Island tied the match, Hartford’s Barry Coffey was denied. However, goalie Antony Siaha stopped the visitors’ following shooter, keeping the score tied at 1-1.

The two teams traded goals on the following four shooters with Hartford’s goals coming from Matt Real and Jordan Scarlett. Tied at 3-3, Rhode Island’s Karifa Yao scored the decisive penalty kick to give the visitors the shootout win. Yao converted to close the fifth round after Samuel Careaga had shot over the crossbar for Hartford.

The hosts went closest to taking the lead in the opening half when Britton Fischer’s header off an angled free kick by Sebastian Anderson was tipped over the crossbar by Vegas. Rhode Island went close just before the hour-mark, however as Jojea Kwizera’s curling shot was spilled by Siaha, only for the goalkeeper to recover and sweep the ball away from danger. Rhode Island threatened to grab victory late in regulation as JJ Williams had an effort blocked with six minutes to go, while Hartford was reduced to 10 players in the 90th minute when Sadat Anaku was sent off for a second yellow card.
